It’s family photos season! We have had photos taken right around this time of year every year since my 3 year old was born. I love having them to look back at! I know I take a gazillion photos all year long with my phone or personal camera. But we’re not all in them, half the time one of the kids is partially undressed, and the quality is nothing to shake a stick at.
There is just something about a beautiful, professional photo be able to look back at.
Another fun part of it for me? Styling everyone! I love picking out the outfits for the whole family, and seeing my vision all come together. It can be a bit daunting at first making sure everyone’s outfit coordinates together without being matchty matchy (white shirt and denim, anyone?), so I wanted to share some of my tips!
Also – I got together again with Cam Storie Photography to do some Holiday/Winter mini sessions! The info is toward the bottom of this post, but it would be the perfect opportunity to practice these tips!

1 // Consider your location – Are you taking photos in a forest? An open field? An urban location? Or a studio with a basic background? For these photos, I knew we were going to have the red car in the woods, so I kept everything else super neutral. A blue color palette here probably would have looked a little off.
2 // And talking about location, remember the weather! You still want the photos to look good, so you wont always be perfectly dressed, but try to be mindful of it, especially for your kiddos. It was FREEZING for this photo so I made sure to incorporate layers into the boys’ outfits.

3 // Colors – Choose your color palette first. You want to pick a couple of colors to spread out across all of the members of your family. For this photo, I took inspiration from my top. I was in gold, and I used the navy and tan of the flowers to spread across my boys and the rest of my outfit.

4 // Consider your people – The purpose of family photos is to capture great photos of your people. You want personalities to shine through. If your one year old hates to wear anything with a collar, you just aren’t going to get his happy, silly personality if you dress him in a collared shirt and bow tie. My favorite family photos are the most natural looking. They’re the ones of us just being us.

4 // RELAX – Whatever you are wearing, just relax and enjoy the time with your family. Too often we stress out way too much about family photos. In turn, it’s a bad experience for everyone. And believe me, this will show up in photos! Genuine smiles and happy people make everything look amazing!
