Before having kids it was so easy to stay active. I was able to just go to the gym whenever I wanted, take whatever yoga or barre class I wanted. I came home and took my shower, got ready and went about my day. Even when I got pregnant, it was still super easy. Yes, I had to modify exercises, but I could still go to the gym to get a workout in frequently. I think I even went to the gym on my due date with Elijah!
Fast forward a few years to having 2 kids and that time I had available has dwindled down significantly. Add to that now gyms being closed, and there are some major roadblocks to staying active.
I have had to get a little creative since having kids and find ways to stay active, even if that doesn’t involve going to the gym always!

9 Ways to Stay Active With Kids
Create a schedule with your partner. If you decide that it is something you want to prioritize, and schedule the time for it, it is so much easier to make it happen! We are going to have to change it a little now that it’s getting warmer, but we were trading off running days while the boys napped. Also – you and your partner are fully capable of watching the kids by yourselves for an hour or so while the other is getting a workout in.
Some scheduling helpers here – any old paper works fine, but having a dedicated workout planning pad can help make it more official! I also love the idea of using a dry erase board that’s easily visible in your home!
Get up early and get it done. Get up before your kids and either go to the gym (once they open), get a run in, or do whatever at home workout you do. You might have to watch one less Netflix episode and go to bed earlier to get up early, but you can do it! Note – only if your kids are sleeping! If you have babies who are up all night, just get your sleep mama!
Put them in the stroller and go for a walk or run! If your kids are stroller age still, this is a great option! We have a BOB double jogging stroller and we love it so much! We got ours used, and we have replaced a couple of things like the basket, but we have gotten so much use out of it! With the weather getting nicer, we go for walks daily, and I have also taken them for a few runs in it! It’s so easy to push and they are generally pretty happy to get out and ride (Isaiah always falls asleep..)!

Go for a hike! There are plenty of hiking trails that are easy enough for little ones to do. If they are little enough, wear them in a baby carrier or hiking backpack. So far we just use our Ergo carrier with Isaiah, but are thinking about getting hiking backpack as he is getting bigger! I have also read great things about this soft carrier too for toddlers. Wearing them is also great because it just adds to your workout! Elijah loves to go for hikes and look for bugs. Its such a good activity to get us outside in nature and also stay active!
Free online workouts! Another hurdle can be that kids cost a lot of money and so do gym memberships. It can be hard to fit it into the budget! There are thousands of workout videos on YouTube that you can do for free in your living room! Literally type in what you are looking for and body weight if you don’t have equipment and you will find something!
Play with your kids! Don’t just sit and watch them run and play – get in there with them! Dance parties, tag games, just simply running around or playing on the playground are all ways to stay active!
Daily activities that get you out of the house. This one feels weird to throw in here now, but once this is alll over, get out and do something every day. Park, zoo, aquarium, going to the store even gets you up and walking around.
Wear your workout clothes. Sometimes you only have a few minutes here or there to get a workout in. Wearing your clothes can help you to utilize that time for a workout instead of having to worry about changing! These bike shorts that I’m wearing aren’t ‘workout’ shorts, but perfect for walks! They are super affordable and cute!

Get your kids involved in workouts! There are tons of kids workouts online as well that allow them to join in on the fun! It’s not going to be as productive of a workout for you, but if it’s the only option you have for the day go for it and have fun with it!
Bonus tip – dry shampoo is your friend! I know we all know this already, but dry shampoo will save you so much time. It’s hard sometimes to get a workout and then still have to wash and dry my hair. For minimal to moderate sweating or pure I have no time, dry shampoo and a quick blast of the blow dryer on a cool setting does the trick!
Being active is a lifestyle choice, not a perfect gym schedule. For me, it’s more about feeling my best and having the most energy I can to keep up with my kids and life more than having a slimmed or toned body. Sure those are side effects of being active that are great, but overall health is the most important thing!
